Kia ora koutou,
It is with great excitement that we invite you to join us for the annual REAP Aotearoa Conference, co-hosted this year by West REAP and Buller REAP. Our conference brings together representatives from the 13 REAPs across Aotearoa, each of which operates in unique and diverse communities. These range from remote rural areas to urban spaces, with each REAP navigating its own set of geographical, social, and economic challenges. This gathering provides an invaluable opportunity to reflect on our shared mission while recognizing the differences that make each of us vital contributors to our communities.
Theme: Community, Connection, and Culture
This year’s theme is Community, Connection, and Culture, focusing on how we can strengthen the bonds within our communities and across our regions. We will delve into the diverse local and regional issues that affect us all, exploring how we, as REAPs, can work together to support one another in addressing these challenges. We will highlight the critical importance of building meaningful connections within our regions, among REAPs, and with the wider community.
Focus on Diversity and Local Issues
Our conference will examine the varying socio-economic and cultural landscapes across New Zealand. We recognize that each REAP serves a community with its own set of needs, and our sessions will provide a platform to share innovative solutions, discuss successes and obstacles, and learn from each other’s experiences. We will also focus on ways to address inequality and foster inclusivity in the diverse regions we serve, ensuring we remain responsive and adaptable to the communities we support.
Connecting with Mana Whenua and Honoring Te Tiriti o Waitangi
One of the key focus areas of this conference will be our connection with Mana Whenua and the ongoing journey to truly honor Te Tiriti o Waitangi in our work as NGOs. Together, we will explore practical and real ways to embed the principles of Te Tiriti in our practices, not only as a legal obligation but as a meaningful part of our organizational values. We’ll engage in discussions on how to strengthen relationships with Mana Whenua in our regions and explore ways to enhance cultural competency within our teams.
As part of this exploration, we are privileged to connect with Kāi Tahu iwi, specifically Kāti Waewae and Makaawhio, during the conference. Our hosts will take us to visit significant cultural sites within their rohe, where we will have the opportunity to hear the pūrākau (stories) of their ancestors, gaining a deeper understanding of their rich heritage and connection to the land. This immersive experience will help us strengthen our relationships with Mana Whenua and reinforce the importance of local histories and cultural narratives in our work.
A Gathering of Learning and Collaboration
This year’s conference is designed to be not only a time of reflection but also a time of active learning and collaboration. Our sessions will be filled with opportunities to discuss practical strategies, share knowledge, and connect with peers across the country. We aim to create an environment where everyone feels supported and empowered to share their experiences and ideas.
Through workshops, presentations, and networking opportunities, you will be able to deepen your understanding of the challenges facing our regions, while also celebrating the innovative and community-led approaches that are making a difference. Whether you are a seasoned REAP leader or new to the REAP family, this conference promises to offer fresh insights and inspire action.
We Look Forward to Welcoming You
We warmly invite you to join us for this special event. The REAP Aotearoa Conference is a unique opportunity to come together, celebrate our collective work, and re-energize our commitment to our communities. Together, we can strengthen our networks, embrace cultural connection, and continue to make a meaningful impact in the lives of those we serve.
Ngā mihi nui,
